MOVIE A DAY CHALLENGE
DAY TWO
EVENT HORIZON
(or Christopher realizes that creativity is dead, he needs to work on his ability to write a quick review, and kind of spoils who the villain is)
WHY DO I OWN THIS?: I love space horror, Dead Space was partially based on this, also I love Sam Neill.
OPINION AFTER WATCHING AGAIN: Although the special effects did not age well… at all, the movie is still entertaining. All the actors seem really into it (for better and worse depending on their talent) and Sam Neill is actually pretty terrifying, but the movie keeps passing between scary and just another Paul W.S. Anderson movie which, although enjoyable, could have been much more improved with a more restrained director, things this movie didn’t need? TECHNO.
Now, despite the fact that certain plot points are clearly just taken out of much better movies (see Solaris but imagine it with much, much, much more blood), and hell 90% of the mysteries of the “Event Horizon” are never really touched upon after they are brought up, this movie still manages to succeed in it’s one true purpose, horror which is truly thanks to the dedication of Laurence Fishbourne and Sam Neill in the lead roles.
FACT: They had to cut around 30 minutes of footage because it unnerved the test audiences (this movie is already pretty messed up, I was pretty shocked to hear that there was footage cut out for being too violent)
NEXT UP: Pandorum? Might just continue this space horror kick, or just say fuck it and watch some bad comedies (I do own a lot of those)
